they DON'T need antibiotics!!!!

Tags:

Every time one of my kids gets sick my mom starts hounding me to give them antibiotics. They don't always need one. Usually their symptoms are because of their allergies or in the case of my youngest daughter it's her asthma. And if they get a fever...forget it...she trys to get their doctor's number from my cell phone to have them seen immediately. I don't do that...I'll give them advil and wait at least 24 hours to see if it stays away on it's own...and it usually does because it's usually a virus (which antibiotics do nothing for). If, after 24 hours, the fever keeps coming back then I take them to the doctor, however...if the doctor doesn't prescribe an antibiotic my mom gets pissed and tells me "that doctor doesn't know what he's doing" or "you should take them to another doctor." I like their doctor and don't want to switch. If anyone SHE should know the dangers of overusing antibiotics. When I was 19, I had an ear infection and ended up in the hospital needing a very strong intraveinious antibiotic because the infection wasn't responding to anything else. I can't stand it...it's almost like she thinks I'm incapable of taking care of my own kids.

I have a friend who takes ...

I have a friend who takes antibiotics everytime he sneezes. There will be no antibiotic he will be able to take when he really gets sick. I avoid them at all costs.

What about looking up info ...

What about looking up info on WebMD about antibiotics (which will explain why they're not always appropriate) and subtly shoving it in mom's face? Seriously? As long as you trust your doctor, just stick to your guns. Grit your teeth and smile as you tell her "They do things differently now, Mom, but thanks for your interest."

We try as hard as possible ...

We try as hard as possible NOT to shove meds down our family's mouths. If there is something that time can't fix, then we see what needs to be done. My family is NEVER sick, and that works for me. Don't ever have to go to the Doctor, except for checkups... I dodn't think anyone would have a problem with that! But, misslisa, my mom is the same way as yours. She is CONSTANTLY popping Advil, so when she takes it, she takes 6 at a time! She kept telling her mom to take her 96 year old grandmother to the doctor for everything...they had my great-grandmother so over medicated it was making her heart have problems. They cut back her meds, and her body was able to re-coup. But the more you take, the more your body becomes "immune" to it, and you have to take more.
Don't let it get you down, misslisa. Just tell her how you feel, and give her the info to back it up, that will keep her quiet!

i never used all those ...

i never used all those antibacterial things growing up. i only wash my hands after touching wierd things and after using the toilet. i was hardly ever sick as a child or still. my friend who is the exact opposite (washes her hands 20 times a day and i married to antibac. gel) is sick much more often than me. i stay away from pills and medicines as often as i can. if i am in a lot of pain or really sick, then i will cave. and i heal quicker. stupid antibacterial stuff. making people sicker.

There's a doctor/author by ...

There's a doctor/author by the name of William G. Crook who writes about what he calls "the Yeast Connection" only I think it would be better named "the Antibiotic Connection" all about Candida. It's a condition brought on by overuse of broad spectrum antibiotics. It can cause a lot of problems. In me it was itching hives many years ago. They were torturous, lasted a couple of years. No Internist or dermatologist or even immunologist was able to figure it out. So I heard Dr. Crook on the radio on three different talk programs on 3 different stations a total of 4 times and decided to give his remedy a try. It was garlic. That's all it took. After 2 years of torture, taking prednisone that could have killed me and would have, and which was causing hormone problems (I didn't see it but everyone around me said I was acting badly while on it) I took over the counter garlic and it solved the problem immediately. It seems that broad spectrum antibiotics kill the good bacteria as well as the bad. The good bacteria in the digestive tract keeps the yeast in check. Kill it and the yeast gets out of control. That's candida in a nutshell as I understand it. Garlic isn't supposed to solve it completely, there's also an antibiotic (of all things) that Dr. Crook says to take to completely cure candida but I never did and I'm fine, have been for over a decade since the last flare up which ended when I first took garlic. A couple of times since, near that time, I felt a tad itchy and took a single garlic gel cap and it went right away again.

What upset me most is that the internist, dermatologist and immunologist (two of them - specialists) charged well over $2K for two years of tests, tests and more tests. They wanted to rule everything OUT. I finally went back to my internist and told him it was high time he rule something IN. There is no end to all of the things they can rule out (the earth the sun the moon, all the stars and every mineral on every one of them). I said it's time to try something new, something creative, I dont' know. He replied "You don't know" and I shut him up right then and there. I told him where to shove his rude bedside manner. I was itching so badly and getting killed by prednisone (it WILL kill a person if taken for too long, no question about it) and I just wanted something done already. So I found Dr. Crook and his book had been in print and in reprint 3 times for over 10 years but NONE of these doctors had heard of it? They just know OLD medicine learned from books in med school that are out of date by the time they are put on the shelves. Then, they follow that stuff and work like crazy to pay off all that schooling and try nothing new to avoid malpractice suits. It is one very sick and broken system. We all have to be our own advocates, be proactive, or employ a friend or family member to do that for us if we are unable.

One brief thought of what a bill from the doctor or hospital or pharmacy would look like is all the "antibiotic" I need. Haven't been to a doctor in almost 10 years and only got sick a couple of times (routine cold or flu) in all that time. Didn't even get the flu shot for a few of those years but did get the flu mist last year and loved how painless it was. That's been my whole medical bill for nearly a decade, about 4 or 5 voluntary donations to the county health department of $10 or $15 for the flu shot or mist vaccines.

My doctor won't give an antibiotic unless you are nearly dead.
