Group asks Google to stop map image service

TOKYO (Reuters) – A group of Japanese lawyers and professors asked on Friday that Google Inc stop providing detailed street-level images of Japanese cities on the Internet, saying they violated privacy rights.

Google's Street View offers ground-level, 360-degree views of streets in 12 Japanese cities and is also offered for some 50 cities in the United States and certain areas in Europe.

The service allows Web users to drive down a street, in a virtual sense, using their mouse to adjust views of roadside scenery.

"We strongly suspect that what Google has been doing deeply violates a basic right that humans have," Yasuhiko Tajima, a professor of constitutional law at Sophia University in Tokyo, told Reuters by telephone.

"It is necessary to warn society that an IT giant is openly violating privacy rights, which are important rights that the citizens have, through this service."

The Campaign Against Surveillance Society, a Japanese civilian group that Tajima heads, wants Google to stop providing its Street View service of Japanese cities and delete all saved images.

Google's office in Tokyo was unable to comment immediately.

Privacy concerns about Google's service have grown in Japanese media, especially after some people discovered their images on Street View.

Similar concerns have been raised in other parts of the world, including the United States and Europe.

In one case, a woman was shown sunbathing and in another a man was pictured exiting a strip club in San Francisco.

In March, Google said it would comply with a Pentagon request to remove some online images from Street View over fears they posed a security threat to U.S. military bases.

Web-based Google Maps and a related computer-based service called Google Earth have drawn criticism from a variety of countries for providing images of sensitive locations, such as military bases or potential targets of terror attacks.

LOLOL, make up my mind!!!!

By: WalterTH3rd in People Who Are..., Email - on December 15th, 2008

This email just arrived today, problem is, except for who (a woman before, a man now) and other fine details (she gave part of her riches to relatives to give to charities but instead kept the money for themselves) They both have the SAME cancer! Kinda makes me wonder if there is something in the water?)- Dear friend As you read this, I don't want you to feel sorry for me, because, I believe everyone will die someday. My name is Jason Wilson I am a merchant of Omani nationality but presently residing in london. I have been diagnosed with Esophageal cancer .It has defiled all forms of medical treatment, and right now I have only about a few months to live, according to medical experts.I have not particularly lived my life so well, as I never really cared for anyone(not even myself)but my business. Though I am very rich, I was never generous, I was always hostile to people and only focused on my business as that was the only thing I cared for. But now I regret all this as I now know that there is more to life than just wanting to have or make all the money in the world.I believe when God gives me a second chance to come to this world I would live my life a different way from how I have lived it. Now that God has called me, I have willed and given most of my property and assets to my immediate and extended family members as well as a few close friends.I want God to be merciful to me and accept my soul so, I have decided to give alms to charity organizations, as I want this to be one of the last good deeds I do on earth. So far, I have distributed money to some charity organizations in the Oman, Algeria and Malaysia. Now that my health has deteriorated so badly, I cannot do this myself anymore. I once asked members of my family to close one of my accounts and distribute the money which I have there to chari! ty organ ization in Bulgaria and Pakistan, they refused and kept the money to themselves. Hence, I do not trust them anymore, as they seem not to be contended with what I have left for them. The last of my money which no one knows of is the huge cash deposit of eighteen million dollars 18,000,000 that I have with a Security Company in europe. I will want you to help me collect this deposit and dispatche it to charity organizations. I have set aside 20% for you and for your time. God be with you.Jason Wilson

Christmas Party ‘to-do’ list!!!

By: WalterTH3rd in OT: Not Necessarily a Pet Peeve, OT: Jokes, Food, Computer, Email - on December 9th, 2008

Yes, some of you already have seen this one, I posted it last year plus it IS making the rounds again in the email rounds. . .

HAVE A GREAT HOLIDAY SEASON 1. Avoid carrot sticks. Anyone who puts carrots on a holiday buffet table knows nothing of the Christmas spirit. In fact, if you see carrots, leave immediately. Go next door, where they're serving rum balls. 2. Drink as much eggnog as you can. And quickly. It's rare.. You cannot find it any other time of year but now. So drink up! Who cares that it has 10,000 calories in every sip? It's not as if you're going to turn into an eggnog-alcoholic or something. It's a treat. Enjoy it. Have one for me. Have two. It's later than you think. It's Christmas! 3. If something comes with gravy, use it. That's the whole point of gravy. Gravy does not stand alone. Pour it on. Make a volcano out of your mashed potatoes. Fill it with gravy. Eat the volcano. Repeat. 4. As for mashed potatoes, always ask if they're made with skim milk or whole milk. If it's skim, pass. Why bother? It's like buying a sports car with an automatic transmission. 5. Do not have a snack before going to a party in an effort to control your eating. The whole point of going to a Christmas party is to eat other people's food for free. Lots of it. Hello? 6. Under no circumstances should you exercise between now and New Year's. You can do that in January when you have nothing else to do. This is the time for long naps, which you'll need after circling the buffet table while carrying a 10-pound plate of food and that vat of eggnog. 7. If you come across something really good at a buffet table, like frosted Christmas cookies in the shape and size of Santa, position yourself near them and don't budge. Have as many as you can before becoming the center of attention. They're like a beautiful pair of shoes. If you leave them behind, you're never going to see them again. 8. Same for pies. Apple, Pumpkin, Mincemeat. Have a slice of each. Or if you don't like mincemeat, have two apples and one pumpkin. Always have three. When else do you get to have more than one dessert? Labor Day ? 9. Did someone mention fruitcake? Granted, it's loaded with the mandatory celebratory calories, but avoid it at all cost. I mean, have some standards. 10. One final tip: If you don't feel terrible when you leave the party or get up from the table, you haven't been paying attention. Re-read tips; start over, but hurry, January is just around the corner. Remember this motto to live by: "Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming "WOO HOO what a ride!" Have a great holiday season Author Unknown

Update on the Teacher Porn Case

By: rkinne01 in People Who Are..., In the News, Laws, Lawyers, Stupid, Computer - on December 3rd, 2008

http://www1.whdh.com/ne ws/articles/local/BO96134/

I posted about this awhile ago but I'll do a quick recapp for anyone who didn't see it.  Julie Amero was convicted after a computer she had been using began to wildly display sexually based pop ups, the woman was NOT surfing for porn and only used the computer for reading email and for taking attendance. The woman, from what I have read, was not tech savvy and did not know how to stop the pop ups (I can tell you it can be hard to turn them off).  This woman was arrested and convicted for this and faced 40 years in prison! A judge later overturned her conviction, but prosecuters filed charges again. The teacher pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor and lost her teaching certification. I didn't see it in the article but I wouldn't be surprised if she would have had to registered as a sex offender.

The whole thing is a disgrace and a mess! The charges filed were for "risk of injury to a minor", huh? Seeing naked people on a TV screen injures teenagers? Keep in mind this was a middle school, kids see each other naked in the showers by now and have no doubt seen thier parents naked, and have the net at home.

I also take issue with a 40 year sentence for something so trivial. Christ some pervert in our town just got 7 years for ACTUALLY sexually violating a 12 year old. The sentence just doesn't fit the crime here, 40 years is too excessive. The woman didn't open the porn this was done by malicious programming on what I believe was a community computer, which means anyone could have infected the system. Where were the firewalls, anti-virus, and other security software? The school should have made sure all that was in place so something like this would never have happened. It seems to me the school needed to place the blame on someone else so they didn't have own up to thier screw up.

Let us be honest here, these kids weren't harmed in anyway. They saw some penis and vagina in a classroom, something they've likely already seen on the computer at home. I also wonder how many of the kids in this class are already sexually active, most of them probably have done the deed. The notion that these kids were harmed by a mere glimpse of some porn is outrageous! The prosecuter who bought the case before a judge should be ran out of office, I would be the first to lead that rally!

We've got people being raped, molested, murdered, and ripped off by REAL criminals and THIS is what we focus on? No wonder why we have so much crime.

A Marketing Strategist Pet Peeves-

By: businessranter in Driving / Traffic, Cell Phones, People Who Are..., Customer Service, Financial, Computer - on October 30th, 2008

My Pet Peeves

This gentleman might be helpful to your business. Check out his website and reach ou to him. A fellow Peever:

When EST was in its heyday, Pete Lillo and I talked about starting a similar training, movement, cult, etc. called EPT. The opposite of inept. Then we realized how few could ever qualify for membership and shelved the idea.

I rarely get headaches, but today I’ve got a watermelon sized throbber. Why? The usual. Ignorance, stupidity, sloppiness and incompetence washing up all around me. A client on a deadline who promised to have needed materials in my hands by this morning; nothing has arrived, yet he’ll still expect me to meet my deadline. A coaching client who actually told me he can’t keep track of and regularly contact 136 accounts. Wants more software. Needs 136 4×6” file cards and a kick in the ass. A woman in front of me simultaneously driving, smoking, putting on lipstick and talking on her cellphone. Another client who has lost information sent twice.

It seems a lot of my pet peeves have surfaced today. Pet peeve: people who send me requests and do not provide their FAX numbers to respond. I do not have time to look these things up. Pet peeve: people with letterhead with their phone and fax in 3 point type that cannot be read without a microscope. (In case you wonder, most of the time I just throw such things out. If I can’t respond easily I don’t respond at all. But occasionally it’s important enough to mandate response. )

Pet peeve: companies that spend a lot of money running an ad to sell something then never answer the phone. Tip: tell people some time when they can get a human. Guy’s advertising a $300,000.00 piece of property I might want to buy. Ran a really big ad with photos. When you call, you get an answering machine with no identification, no reference to the ad, no time given you can call, no other means of communicating. Into the trash. When I was spending front-end ad dollars, I had phones answered. Pet peeve: clients, coaching members who just don’t get in gear, don’t implement.

Fooling around forever to get their mailing p-e-r-f-e-c-t, instead of getting it mailed. Hey, even authors eventually get it – the bragging rights aren’t to the best writing author but to the best selling author. Pet peeve: people who can’t be where they’re supposed to be, on time, without being babysat. “Oh, there was traffic.” Yep, everyday. In my world, 8:00 AM doesn’t mean 8:10 AM.

Martha, Donald, Steve Wynn, the mega-rich entrepreneurs who built it from scratch didn’t get it done and can’t stay at the top by being soft or nice or tolerant or forgiving or sloppy or slow. I’ve studied them all. I’ve talked to some of their employees. The person who books their NetJets flights. Their suppliers. They’re all described as “S.O.B.’s.” But they’re not. They’re just intolerant of ineptitude.

Whatever you tolerate in your world takes root and grows and blossoms. So even at the price of the occasional whopper of a headache, even at the price of being disliked, even at the price of firing clients and suppliers from time to time, I refuse to let the weeds take over the garden. So I let a few folks have it today. To the moon. Now I’m going to lie down in my massage chair with a cold cloth on my head.

In your next Success Marketing Strategy I will tell you about the biggest adult holiday of the year – no it's not what you think—and how you should be profiting from it.

Dedicated To Multiplying Your Income,

Dan Kennedy

Hmmm, must be all the LEGAL drugs!!!!

Dutch court convicts 2 of stealing virtual items

AMSTERDAM, Netherlands – A Dutch court has convicted two youths of theft for stealing virtual items in a computer game and sentenced them to community service.

Only a handful of such cases have been heard in the world, and they have reached varying conclusions about the legal status of "virtual goods."

The Leeuwarden District Court says the culprits, 15 and 14 years old, coerced a 13-year-old boy into transferring a "virtual amulet and a virtual mask" from the online adventure game RuneScape to their game accounts.

"These virtual goods are goods (under Dutch law), so this is theft," the court said Tuesday in a summary of its ruling.

Identities of the minors were not released.

The 15-year-old was sentenced to 200 hours service, and the 14-year-old to 160 hours.

A question for everyone

By: rkinne01 in Computer, PC - on October 21st, 2008

I've been thinking of ways to help family and friends with computer problems (including everyone here). I'm looking to set up a website to solve the most common problems that I'm asked about.

I've posted some help on this site before and would like to know if you've thought my posts have been helpful or not. Do I provide enough details or too few? Are my instructions enough or are you left scratching your heads? Any other comments?

Heres my plan for the page:

Linking to sites that I think will be easy to understand.

Creating my own content using text based support, audio, and later on some video content.

Informing readers of news articles related to tech and how these articles apply to their everyday lives.

Non-partison political talk related to tech. I'll discuss things like The Digital Mellenium Act, net neutrality, and other bills.

I'll also post links to software I think are useful to users (DVD Profiler, Desktopia, AVG Antivirus, Switcher). I'll also post about software to avoid (Norton products, McAfee, etc).

‘Stirring up the pot’ . . .

By: WalterTH3rd in Politics/Politicians, Email - on October 19th, 2008

'Nice' radio ad sent to my email box . . .assuredly TGIX will have something to say against this, but I want to hear it. (betting he can't answer without searing OR racists language as is his norm.Annoyed)

Obama claims he cares about poor blacks, but a Boston Globe report exposed how for eight years Obama supported slum projects in Chicago.

Poor blacks living in rat and roach infested apartments condemned Obama for not caring about them.

Cynthia Ashley, a fourteen-year resident said: "No one should have to live like this, and no one did anything about it."

Anthony Frizzell a twenty-year resident said: "In the winter I can feel the cold air coming through the walls and the sockets."

Sharee Jones who has lived for years with the rats said: "You could hear them under the floor and in the walls, and they didn't do nothing about it."

Paul Johnson who helped organize a protest against Obama said: "Of course he knew. He just didn't care."

Showing he just didn't care, Obama wrote letters on Illinois Senate letterhead supporting government loans for slum projects.

Obama coauthored the Illinois law that gave tax breaks to his slum lord friends, including now convicted felon Tony Rezko who helped Obama buy a million-dollar house.

As a US Senator, Obama worked to increase federal subsidies for his slum lord pals who donated more than $175,000 to Obama's campaigns with Rezko raising another $200,000.

While running for president, Obama is promising to create a fund that gives his slum lord buddies $500 million a year. This is outrageous.

Rave then rant….

By: AKsnowbunnie in OT: Not Necessarily a Pet Peeve, Computer - on October 18th, 2008

Our Hockey team had the season opener, against a "rival" I would say (I could be wrong). It was an awesome game, honestly the BEST hockey game I have EVER been to. Lots of fights, lots of good passes, and team work, and even lots of laughs from guys falling down trying to skate! Alaska Aces won, 4-1! Honestly, worth MORE then then $21 I spent to go. I should have bought a ticket for tomorrow too, but I'm going to FINALLY go see Dark Knight…. I took my cheapo camera (which has already survived one hit to concrete) to the game. I got a good shot of a clean hit (it was a long fight, I got around 8 pics from it). Hope you like it!! I love how his hair is moving!!! Aces in Blue, Vegas Wrangler (#15) in Black.

DSC00192zoomed.jpg

OK here's my rant….

My computer has "hit a wall". Last week I had LOTS of room on my C drive, and now I'm down to almost nothing, well at least it's slow. All I have done is transfer images and music from place to place. Nothing more. It's not slow and sluggish to type or normal operations, but to open a photo it took WAAAAAAY to long. I looked and it's scary how little memory I have left (50%)… And there are certain things I can do more easily then others. Surfing the web is faster then opening an image! Internet music is faster then opening my control panel.. Just weird, and messing with my head. I have 10 GB of 20 GB free on my C drive, and 85 of 125 free on my T drive (where everything is stored - it's split). What I don't get is why it's slow to open stuff out of nowhere… I did a defrag and all that "great chit"… it said I don't need to but I did anyways (disc cleanup and defrag). I just downloaded Norton 2009, that is the ONLY change made in the last week. Other then moving images to my computer and downloading tunes.

GAH I wish I NEVER bought a ticket home for X-mas and instead bought a Mac and paid off bills. It's horrible to say, but it's the truth! Please no one tell my mom I sad that!! It would break her heart and her heart is HONESTLY the only reason I'm going home for the holiday!

Danger Will Robinson, Danger!

By: rkinne01 in Computer, Internet, Mac, PC, Email - on October 6th, 2008

Look out for a program called either Anti-Virus 2008 or 2009 (no brand name). Its a NASTY piece of malware that could do major damage to your PC, it affects both Macs and Windows! It looks like and acts like a anti-virus program, very professional looking and "scans" files, but is really looking for places to put keyloggers, viruses, and trojans.

According to what I've read about it is that it gets onto your computer via web banners or pop ups that inform you that you're infected with some sort of virus. You should never have 2 anti-vrus programs installed at the same time, they can really screw things up. If you are using Norton and a notification pops up that is not from Norton do not click on it at all either end the process or close it via the bar at the bottom of the screen (not sure how it works on the MAC).

I had to fix a computer with this installed, its a witch to get rid of! I think i got it but wouldn't be surprised if I didn't get everything off, I suspect I may have to reformat the whole computer!  Arggh!

Ahhh, technology brings a mess

By: AKsnowbunnie in Shopping, Cell Phones, Entertainment, Life, Customer Service, Computer - on September 16th, 2008

I don't know about the rest of you, but I love all this new technology. I have my iPod Touch, my cell phone (which takes some crummy pictures, but still it takes them), and now two digital cameras. I went out and bought a cheaper one that way I don't lose or break or ANYTHING my good one (it's discontinued). So because of all these things, which I love, I have a huge mess in my purse. Why can't all companies use the normal USB size? I don't have much in my purse, but I do have all my cords I need for all my electronics that are with me at all times (I plug into work and home). This means a digital camera cord, a phone cord, an iPod cord, AND those crummy little ear buds that iPod gives you (seriously, they suck). I can't even fit them in my ear due to a konch piercing that I have. I will go get better headphones, but then that's going to take up more room!!!

Come on companies!!! Make ALL your products use a typical USB cord on both ends and make life easier!! Then I would only need one cord in my purse, and might not need the xanax in there!

I-Tunes 8.0 My Review

By: rkinne01 in People Who Are..., Computer, Mac, PC - on September 11th, 2008

8.0 is BUGGY, I installed it last night and it promptly crashed my PC.  Itunes 8 is more unstable than a drunk Tim Allen at dangerous hardware convention. I've had it installed for 24 hours and it has crashed my computer 4 times,  4 TIMES! It refuses to start then I get the infamous Windows Blue Screen of death. I went to Apple's website, as per usual they blame everyone but themselves.

The new Genius feature is kind of cool. Genius analyzes your music and reccomends new music to you and can create a  playlist made up of similar tracks. For example, if you like Sheryl Crow Genius will create a playlist of like artists like Stevie Nicks, Jewel, and others to go a long with your selection.  I haven't played around much with it, its slooooowww but I can see the potental in it.

We also get a new view method which is really just a grid of Album art, nothing special.

NBC shows are back and Apple now offers HD video, with quite a few HD shows being offered for free.  The HD files take up quite a bit of space so beware. I also noticed that they're added a bunch of new TV networks in addition to NBC.

I advise everyone to wait a week or two for updates to come out, till then don't bother with this turkey!

A rave on the Future of the Internet and Why Surfing the Web May Become A Major Pain

By: rkinne01 in Computer, Internet, Mac, PC, Email - on August 24th, 2008

http://n ews.cnet.com/8301-13578_3-10019622-38.html?tag=cnetfd.mt

This is an article about the RIAA and Motion Picture Industry demanding that ISPs (Comcast, AT&T, Verizon, etc), allow them to track customer internet traffic in order to prevent piracy!

I also heard on a Podcast by Leo Laporte that ISP's will eventually be limiting bandwidth. What this means is that you'll be given say 5 gigabytes every month, if you exceed your set amount you'll either be cut off, have your broadband connection slowed, or be charged for overages. The ISPs are already doing this without notifying customers in some areas, Comcast has started doing this and maybe sued for doing so. This is simply a way for Internet providers to squeeze more money outta our pockets and its BS! I'll also point out that more and more of us are downloading movies and videos on daily basis

I am also concerned about the increasing amount of websites that want a subscription fee to use thier sites. Online gaming is a prime example, not only do you have to pay for the game itself but you also have to pay a monthly fee to play it.

I don't know about the rest of you but if all this comes to pass I'm done, finished, no more internet for me. I'm not paying my ISP every month for access only to be spied upon, then be limited when I wasn't limited before, and then also be increasingly charged to access the websites I visit. No way, not going to happen.
